Help this Bill get through

27 February 2021

The Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill tabled on the 2nd September 2020 was initially part of ‘The Big Ask Campaign’ initiated by Friends of the Earth.  Caroline Lucas was the first of 6 sponsors needed for a Private Members Bill to be accepted for its first reading. The remaining 5 sponsors are; Clive Lewis (Labour), Alan Brown (Scottish National Party), Wera Hobhouse (Liberal Democrat), Liz Saville Roberts (Plaid Cymru), Claire Hanna (Social Democratic and Labour). In total 87 MPs have signed to support the Bill, none are Conservatives.

In short the motion acknowledges the warning from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that ‘rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society’, are needed if we are to limit global warming to 1.5C. They go on to state that the target set in the 2008 Climate Change Act has been overtaken by the accelerating crisis.

The Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill would ensure that the UK, ‘plays its fair and proper role’ in limiting global temperatures to 1.5 by taking account of the UKs entire carbon footprint, including consumption emissions released overseas as a result of goods manufactured abroad for use in the UK in doing so this would actively improve the natural world by protecting and restoring the UKs ecosystems and ending the damage to nature caused by supply chains.

If you can, please write to Theo Clarke asking her to join the other 87 MPs in support of the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill and ask the government to allocate time to its debate.
